Cut from a Different Cloth / Comfort Quilt
What makes us cherish some possessions, while others are packed away or given to goodwill? It’s a funny thought. Some of the things I really cherish I have locked in a keepsake box. Tucked away are small little knick-knacks … a favorite bandana … a shell and sari from Hawaii. These little mementos are things that I cannot give away – yet I don’t get to enjoy them unless I set time aside to open my keepsake box.
I think that one of my favorite things about making special memory quilts is, the one thing they hold in common is that they turned treasured items into a comfort quilt.
a state of physical ease and freedom from pain or constraint.
things that contribute to physical ease and well-being.
prosperity and the pleasant lifestyle secured by it.
“my father left us enough to live in comfort”
the easing or alleviation of a person’s feelings of grief or distress.
“a few words of comfort”
a person or thing that helps to alleviate a difficult situation.
“his friendship was a great comfort”
US dialect a warm quilt.
Many times the fabrics are worn and faded, stitched from blue jeans, work shirts, suit fabric, dresses, pillowcases, scarves, t-shirts, or just about anything really. This gathering of unique fabric mementos are usually not made from the latest, greatest nor the brightest fabrics- but these quilts have value beyond any commercial quilts. Each block of fabric is stitched together as a its own threaded keepsake. Memory upon memory – arranged in perfect harmony. Even better than a keepsake box, that you drag out every few years, these comfort quilts are made to be used. They warm you as you snuggle in to read a book. They drape over the back of a sofa, or the arm of a chair for decoration. Comfort quilts are a practical, warm, and provide memories that bring a smile. They blanket a bed, bringing good memories to mind. Their textures are familiar, their colors are heartwarming, and wrapped around shoulders feels like a familiar hug.
We live in a world filled with commercialism. We are pressured to buy the newest styles that are outdated a year later; gadgets that break and add to landfills; state-of-the-art technology that distracts us from life. In this world of fast cars, busy people, and ladder-climbing – I am glad that my job helps others slow down to focus on the thing that matters most: Our loved ones, our memories, and good old-fashioned comfort.
As few people today know … one of the several meanings of comfort is: a quilt.
As I knot the last thread of a handmade memory quilt, I smile at the thought of quilts and comfort. I believe it embodies everything that I put into my work. When I lovingly box up a comfort quilt for shipping, I imagine the smiles that it will bring when the quilt finds its way home.
